Ditch the New Years' Resolution and Ask This Instead
For so many of us, New Years is a fresh start. Many people set resolutions or goals, but honestly the thought of that sounds completely “shackles on”…. not freeing, at all!
If you are like me, you have set goals or resolutions in the past. You were super committed…for a few weeks and then life got in the way. It slips away from you and soon you realize it is more difficult to change your ways than it is to just keep things the same. This, of course, leads to feelings of failure and shame, making matters worse.
So, what do you do?
Do you just decide to avoid the whole self-reflection?
Do you vow to never set another resolution or goal?
For most of us, the goal or resolution is based on this fantasy of an outcome. We desire the end result and DREAM of being there… in the accomplishment. There is nothing wrong with this. I believe truly feeling INTO a dream or goal is a great way to stay motivated and help you achieve it.
Here’s the problem: we want the result and we forget the process. We never wanted the process!
Here’s a better question.
What are you willing to work for?
What journey and process are you willing to sacrifice for? What lights you up so much, you will continue moving forward despite all of the setbacks, failures and roadblocks?
We learn and grow the most through our heartbreaks, failures, depressions, and losses. How would you know happiness without knowing sadness? What if it was actually the struggles in life that make life worth living?
I find this is exceptionally true with health.
If you’ve been fortunate enough to have great health in your life, it is likely difficult to relate to someone who is chronically ill. You can’t understand why they don’t just get better!
If you have struggled with poor health, you know how profoundly and completely it can affect your life. How lonely it can feel when people can't understand why you don’t feel well, why you miss so much work or why you can’t go out.
It sounds so easy to take the pill offered by your doctor, but what happens if the pill doesn't work? Or what if the pill comes with bothersome side-effects? Or what happens if the pill stops working? Or what happens if there is no pill for your condition?
If this is where you are at, or if you are not satisfied with some pill that will put a big band-aid on the problem without uncovering why you are not well, then you are in the right place.
Asking why throughout my life has delivered me to where I am at now. In my functional practice, I ask why a lot. I keep asking why until both you and I are satisfied with the answers and have enough information to guide you on your journey back to health.
For me, health is my journey worth working for. It’s been a long road and I am in the baby stages of finding my own answers, but I will not give up!
Because, in the end, if you don’t have your health, what do you have?
To truly achieve health, especially if you've been sick for a while, it does take some sacrifices and commitment to change. It takes lifestyle changes, dietary changes, mindset changes and possibly some clearing of the negative influences in your life.
If you are like me and are willing to do what it takes to get better, I invite you to schedule a free 20 minute consultation. Pick my brain and see if I can help you. I promise your health is worth the journey!
